NEW WORM HIT AIM NETWORK
Yet again, a worm spread quickly on America Online's AIM instant messaging service but was contained within hours, experts said. The worm spread in instant messages with the text: "LOL LOOK AT HIM" and included a Web link to a file called "picture.pif." If that file was downloaded and opened, the worm would send itself to all contacts on the victim's AIM Buddy List.

P2P FUELS GLOBAL BANDWIDTH BINGE
Wired Magazine reports that TeleGeography, a telecommunications research firm, found international demand for bandwidth grew 42 percent in 2004, with the largest upswing in usage coming from Asian nations.

REUTERS SELECTS FACETIME AS OEM PROVIDER FOR ITS MESSAGING COMPLIANCE SOLUTION
The new compliance solution, which Reuters plans to release later this year, will support customers' needs to meet strict compliance and corporate governance requirements imposed on the highly regulated financial services sector. This announcement complements Reuters existing relationship with FaceTime under the Reuters Messaging Compliance Partner Program.

UNIPALM SIGNS INSTANT DEAL WITH FACETIME
It was all change in the instant messaging (IM) distribution sector last week, with vendor FaceTime ending its relationship with e92plus and signing Unipalm. At the same time, Unipalm terminated its distribution agreement with IMlogic to become FaceTime's sole UK distributor.

SPYWARE FLOODS IN THROUGH BITTORRENT
No longer is BitTorrent immune from the adware/spyware blitz plaguing most P2P networks. According to an article in eWeek, the warm and fuzzy world of BitTorrent has been invaded by a massive software distribution campaign linked to New York-based adware purveyor Direct Revenue LLC.

U.S. VOTERS WANT MORE CYBERSECURITY
A whopping 97 percent rated identity theft as a serious problem while 93 percent cited spyware as troublesome. A particularly "stunning" result, according to CSIA executive director Paul Kurtz, was the 48 percent who said they avoid making purchases on the Internet out of fear that their financial data might be stolen.

FACETIME ACQUIRES ANTI-SPYWARE VENDOR XBLOCK
Bolstering FaceTime's approach to enterprise spyware prevention and securing IM, P2P and other emerging greynets, FaceTime recently announced the acquisition of XBlock Systems and the popular reference site SpywareGuide.com.
The XBlock asset acquisition enhances FaceTime's defense-in-depth approach to enabling the secure use of legitimate greynet applications like instant messaging (IM) and web conferencing, while providing comprehensive protection against illegitimate applications.

WAS THE STAR WARS 'SITH' LEAK DELIBERATE?
The appearance online of Revenge of the Sith before its official release raises some interesting questions, particularly in light of the take-down of the Elite Torrent BitTorrent indexing site.
According to P2P.net, Homeland Security, the FBI's Cyber Division and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, "today [marks] the first criminal enforcement action targeting individuals committing copyright infringement on peer-to-peer (P2P) networks using cutting edge file-sharing technology known as BitTorrent".
